A Life in Relationship

I found myself noticing the relationships between things — the way one presence
seemed to be speaking to another.

I couldn’t look at a tree without wondering what it was saying to the wind.

I couldn’t watch a bee without sensing that something far greater than pollination was taking place.

Even the conversations I shared with people seemed to carry another conversation quietly
unfolding beneath the words.

For many years I didn’t know how to speak about this. I simply knew that life felt profoundly alive, and that everything seemed to belong to something much larger than itself.

“A woman sitting beneath an ancient tree among animals, birds, insects, plants and water, representing the living community of nature.”

For generations, we have often thought of relationship as something that happens primarily between people. Yet relationship is occurring everywhere, all the time.

The tree is in relationship with the soil, the rain, the fungi beneath its roots, the insects that visit it, the birds that shelter in its branches, and the air moving through its leaves.

The bee is in relationship with the flower. The flower with the sun. The body with breath.
The ocean with the moon.

And we are participating in these relationships too.

We feel the temperature of a room when we enter it. Our bodies respond to another person’s presence before a word is spoken. A piece of music changes our breathing. A place can settle us. A memory can move through the body years after the moment itself has passed. A dream can remain with us throughout the day, quietly changing what we notice.

There is a presence.

An invisible movement.

A living exchange.

Relationship is continually happening through us and around us — information moving, being received, responded to, and becoming part of what happens next.

This is where A Life in Relationship begins.

Not with learning another way to manage our relationships, but with becoming aware of the relationships already taking place.

And as we begin to notice them, something changes. The world becomes less like a collection of separate things and more like a living conversation in which we are already participating.

This page is not about changing the way you think about relationship. It is an invitation to begin noticing
the countless relationships that have quietly sustained your life from the very beginning.
Once we begin to see them, the world no longer feels made up of separate things.
It becomes a living conversation, and we discover that we have always belonged within it.
